Dojran, formerly Star Dojran was first inhabited in prehistoric times, and the first written document of the city dates from the 5th century, in which the Greek historian Herodotus wrote about the Peonians, an ancient Thracian-Illyrian people, who founded and expanded the city. Herodotus points out how the Peonians lived in settlements that could only be accessed by boat, settlements that still exist today on the west and north shores of Lake Dojran, between the reed beds and the lake itself.
