Bike through the Vasconavarro

This proposal to get to know the Vía Verde del Vasco Navarro by bicycle, aims to revive part of the route of what was one of the most important railways in Spain.

Leaving Vitoria – Gasteiz (Álava), it is a simple and attractive route to Estella (Navarra) entering the Llanada Alavesa and through the best landscapes of the Montaña Alavesa. It is considered one of the longest greenways in the country.

Our proposal includes a circular in Vitoria through the green areas of the Basque capital, European Green Capital of 2012.

Option of 3 stages and 3 nights Vitoria – Estella + green ring of the capital Day 1: arrival at the first hotel the night before the first stage. Arrival in Vitoria Relax day to visit Vitoria the day before you start pedaling. Here you will receive the bikes in case you have rented them. Today is a day to relax and get ready to ride the Vía Verde del Vasco Navarro by bicycle.

Day 2: Return to the green ring of Vitoria 30 km Today you will pedal along a circular route that surrounds Vitoria by touring and linking all the parks that form the Green Ring of the city. A very interesting tour to get to know the parks and green areas of the city in a relaxed way.

Day 3: Vitoria – Gasteiz – Maestu 33 km and 460 m of slope We will start pedaling smoothly along the Greenway of the Basque Navarro Railway away from Vitoria. It is worth a quick stop at the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Estíbaliz, a jewel of Romanesque art from the 11th century.

Then we go deeper and deeper into typical forests of the area next to small villages. This first section is conditioned by the Laminoria tunnel (2,195 m.), which is currently impassable and closed. To save it, you can do it by a short road detour without traffic or through a mountain track where you probably have to walk down the slopes during the ascent and descent. This section of track is the only section that presents a certain difficulty. Of course, it is a beautiful stretch in the middle of native forest in Montaña Alavesa. Once we leave the mountain track, we will descend the port of Guereñu until returning to the original route of the Greenway, where a few kilometers and after passing through a sound tunnel, we will arrive at Maestu.

Day 4: Maestu – Estella45 km and 60 m of slope After breakfast, and shortly after starting to pedal, we will leave Álava lands to enter Navarra. Where we will arrive at the end of the Greenway of the Vasconavarro Railway in Estella, located in the old Estella Railway station, today a bus station. Here ends the journey.
