Dojran, formerly Star Dojran, was first inhabited in prehistoric times, and the first written record of the city dates back to the 5th century, in which the Greek historian Herodotus, wrote about the Peonians, an ancient Thracian-Ilyrian people, who founded and expanded the city. Herodotus notes how the Peonians lived in settlements that could only be reached by boat, settlements that still exist today on the western and northern shores of Lake Dojran, between the reed beds and the lake itself.
