Andujar Marian fervor

The Basilica and Royal Sanctuary of Nuestra Señora de la Cabeza was initially built between 1287 and 1304 in the Cerro de la Cabeza, from which it takes the title of its invocation, located in the same place where the image appeared in 1227. During its existence it underwent several transformations, the main one at the end of the 16th century by the architect Andrés de Valdelvira.

The pilgrimage to the Basilica is the second oldest in our country, with nearly 800 years of history. Named by writers such as Cervantes and Lope de Vega, it lives its most exciting moments with the transfer of the image from the “camarín” to the “andas”, where it will have spent the night waiting for the arrival of the “anderos”.
