The Greenway of the Sierra de Alcaraz runs along the old Baeza – Utiel railway line, taking us first through the agricultural lands of the Albacete plain and then submerging us in the basin of the Jardín River. In its vicinity, we can admire the beautiful lagoons of Arquillo and the Ojos de Villaverde.

A road full of tunnels, Manchegan landscapes and a viaduct with an impressive panorama of Alcaraz and the Sanctuary of the Virgin of Cortes, marking the end of the route. We will also enjoy an immersion into the world of olive oil visiting a traditional olive oil mill and we will learn about the cultural and monuments of the beautiful cities of Albacete and Alcaraz.

ITINERARY

DAY 1 - Albacete

Upon your arrival in Albacete, you will have time to get settled in your hotel before going out to taste the best of the local cuisine in one of the traditional restaurants of the city. We will visit the Museo de la Cuchillería, a beautiful mansion of the 20th century where we will discover the importance of this artistic activity in the history of Albacete. Then, we will visit the old quarter of the city, we will discover a set of monuments, buildings and interesting architectural constructions such as, the Cathedral of San Juan Bautista, the Town Hall and the Circus Theater.

DAY 2 - Albacete-Balazote

We will begin the journey through the greenway from the Tree Festival Park. In the first kilometers, we will share tracks with the Route of Don Quixote, accompanied by a landscape of cereals and crops. We will find rest areas in the stations of San Jorge, at km 9 and Santa Ana at km 16. We will arrive at Balazote, here we will eat and have free time to enjoy the city at our leisure. We recommend you to visit the town hall square, where you will find a replica of an amazing and mysterious Iberian figure called “La Bicha de Balazote”. The piece was originally found in Balazote and is currently in the National Archaeological Museum in Madrid.

 

 

DAY 3 - Balazote-Alcaraz

Continuing our journey, we will see how the landscape changes completely, since we will alternate embankments with trenches dug in reddish materials near the vega of the Jardín River. In this section we find a succession of long tunnels, which are part of the charm of the route, but will require the use of flashlights. When we reach the resting area of ​​El Jardín, we will stop and we will have time to contemplate the birds in the Laguna del Arquillo and in the Ojos de Villaverde, which are in the vicinity. We will eat at one of the local restaurants before continuing with our tour.

Arriving at Los Chopes, we will visit a cattle ranch to learn about the world of fighting bulls. Near our destination, we will see the Solanilla viaduct, from which we will have an impressive panoramic view of the city of Alcaraz and the Sanctuary of the Virgen de Cortes. From here a continuous and smooth descent begins until the exit of the last tunnel of our route. After crossing it, we will reach the Sanctuary of the Virgen de Cortes in Alcaraz, this will be the end of our route along the Greenway of the Sierra de Alcaraz. We will arrive at our accommodation and we will have time to rest before dinner.

 

DAY 4 - Alcaraz

We will walk along with our host to the old town of Alcaraz, discovering the most representative points of the city, such as the Plaza Mayor of Alcaraz, the Church of the Holy Trinity, the Carpet Workshop and the Church of San Miguel. After lunch, we will visit an organic olive oil mill near Alcaraz and learn about the different varieties of oils that they produce, we will also taste them.

DAY 5 - Alcaraz-Albacete

After breakfast, we will return to Albacete. We will stop on the way to visit a wine cellar located in the heart of the Sierra de Alcaraz. With our host, we will visit the vineyards and learn about the characteristics and peculiarities of their production. When we arrive in Albacete, we will have free time to stroll around the city at our leisure.

DAY 6 - Albacete

Today we will return home, if we wish we can make an extension to our itinerary and visit nearby cities of great cultural interest such as Jaén, Úbeda, Baeza or Andújar.
